
Summary of Terriers
The west highland white terrier part of the third group of canine breeds, which bring together the diverse family of terrier. The name derives from the Latin terrier "terra" and indicates the ability of some breeds to hunt even in the dens, namely, to prosecute and to cope with the piece until its shelter.
This group is composed of 38 dog breeds, of which 26 are from the British Isles and the remainder derived from them. The Scottish terrier breeds are five, all of them small size and short legs. These are: the west highland white terrier (westies), the scottish terrier, the cairn terrier, the dandie dimmont terrier and the skye terrier.
History of the West Highland White Terrier
One of the earliest accounts of the breed is commissioned by the King James, commissioning six small and white "earth doggs terrier" to be sent from Argyll to France as a gift for the king.
The recent history of the breed lies in the nineteenth century with the flourishing of hunting and breeding both in the islands and in the Scottish highlands.
The highlands and the Scottish islands were, like other Scottish terrier, the area of origin of this variety. Specifically in Argyllshire, Scotland region hard life from the sea, rocks and ice. Because of the rugged terrain, in order to stop pests such as foxes or hunting some animals for their skins (otter, badger, etc.). Raised the west highland white terrier.

The colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch, regarded as the creator of the breed, to the following story:
"The colonel brought with him to his favorite terrier, a dog's red-brown, and was following the trail to a hare. Where terrier disappeared in a den. Shortly thereafter, the colonel saw out, like an arrow hole body which confuses with a hare, shot with an accurate shot, but killed his own dog".
After the accident decided to raise only white terrier. Colonel Malcolm not only took into account their breeding kennels but toured much of the territory Scots. And the colonel Malcolm suggested that the registration of the name by now known to breed.
Before 1824 white dogs were obtained both cairn terrier type as the type west highland white terrier, however, after that date the British Kennel Club stopped accepting registration for white puppies from litters of cairn terrier.
It thus officially confirm the division between the two breeds.
The West Highland White Terrier was recognized as breed independent in 1904.
Was founded in 1905, also in England, the West Highland White Terrier Club. The clubs contribute to the protection, improvement of the breed from a morphological and entered into the world of exhibitions.
At present the west highland white terrier is one of the most requested breeds for pet, for its size is ideal for small spaces, strength and stamina with children.
